In a recent development, lawyer Maurice Ampaw has issued a warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding their stance on former sanitation minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah.
Speaking on his show, “Mmra Ne Abrabo Mu Nsem,” on Wontumi TV on August 21, 2023, Ampaw emphasized the importance of defending embattled members within the party and cautioned about potential consequences if this support is lacking.
Ampaw drew a parallel with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), highlighting instances where they stood by their embattled members in times of crisis.
He specifically pointed to the case of James Gyakye Quayson, a Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency, who faced expulsion from Parliament and criminal charges in the High Court.
The lawyer’s argument revolved around the notion that the NPP should take a page from the NDC’s playbook in supporting their members.

Cecilia Abena Dapaah is currently under investigation for alleged corruption and related offenses concerning a significant sum of money that was reportedly stolen from her residence.
Ampaw made it clear that, in his view, Cecilia Dapaah is not a criminal according to the law. He stressed that her alleged actions did not constitute a violation of any legal statutes.
He was quoted as saying, “If you don’t come and defend the poor woman who is currently being attacked, the consequences will come, and you will live to regret it because Cecilia Dapaah has never broken any laws; in fact, she is not a criminal, a thief, or a criminal in the eyes of any law.”

Cecilia Dapaah, in response to the investigation, resigned from her ministerial position and was subsequently arrested and released on bail by the Special Prosecutor.
The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng, initiated a corruption and corruption-related investigation following the alleged theft case at Dapaah’s residence.
In light of this investigation, the Office of the Special Prosecutor has taken steps to freeze certain bank and investment accounts belonging to the former Minister. They are also seeking a confirmation order from the High Court in Accra. However, legal representatives for Cecilia Dapaah have contended that the money found in her Abelemkpe residence does not necessarily imply ownership.
The situation surrounding Cecilia Abena Dapaah remains complex and contentious, with legal and political implications. The call by lawyer Maurice Ampaw to rally behind her reflects the ongoing debate over how political parties should respond to allegations against their members.
