Vote-Buying Can Never Be Stopped In Ghana’s Politics – Ben Ephson

In a recent interview on class Fm this morning, Ghanaian journalist and pollster, Ben Ephson revealed that vote buying cannot be stopped from Ghana politics.

His comment came after a lot of people claimed that delegates of the just-ended NPP party national election were given a lot of money by the contestants to vote for them. Some people were voted for, while others lost, even with the huge sum of money they spent.

He said:

Is he suggesting that he didn’t spend any money persuading people on his road to winning and becoming a member of parliament? It is a habit that the delegates have picked up from the politicians, and it won’t stop.

The delegate is not a fool; he knows in the third year there will be elections to elect a parliamentary candidate, so you are softening him; it’s a game they play, so it won’t stop. “You elect an MP. The first two years he won’t mind you. From the third year, at Christmas time, he would start bringing you cloth, giving you money for chicken for your soup.”
