“Do not enter into marriage with the purpose of having children”, Community psychologist and lecturer at the University of Ghana Legon, Dr. Johnny Andoh-Arthur advises couples.
Dr. Jonny Andoh-Arthur who was a guest on Ghana’s Men Lounge show on eTV with Nana Yaw Odame during an interview spoke on the effects of childlessness in a marriage. He said during the show that in this part of our world, when a married man does not have children, society sees that man to be less of a man.
He further stated that “Children are important. They are critically important but they are not all that there is to marriage. We live in a society where we’re always inclined towards birth so marriage and procreation are intertwined”.
In the men’s world, children index our masculinity so when there are no children, society makes us believe we’re less of men and there are even certain roles that if you do not have a child, you cannot assume”,
According to Dr Johnny, most men expects that within the first year of marriage, children should begin to come and when this does not go as expected, then frustration sets in.
He added that due to this pressure from society, men get frustrated so much that they are eager to try any solution that they feel may help them and this is where fake medicine sellers and fake pastors get the opportunity to exploit them.
