The Ghana Police Service through the Eastern regional command is proposing the airlifting of electoral materials to island communities during the December general elections in Ghana.
Speaking in an interview monitored by this news portal, the Eastern Regional Police Commander DCOP Edward Johnson Oyirifi-Akrofo said “The request that the region has made because it was observed that, at times there will be delays in the conveyance of election materials and transportation of security personnel who are supposed to police the various polling stations so because they are Islands as you rightly said, Personnel will have to be ferried so we have requested for lifejackets for their use and if possible for helicopter services to transport the materials. That is the request that we are hoping that such arrangements will be made for the smooth conduct of the election in those areas”
Usually, security personnel and officials of the Electoral commission are ferried to the electoral areas in the island communities.
This the commander said delays the entire electoral process for people living in the island areas.
Some of the island communities include the Kwahu Afram Plains North and South which over 80 polling stations in that electoral area.
The Eastern generally has about 3,704 polling stations with 891 of such stations have identified as flashpoints by the Ghana Police Service.
