Youth leader remanded by the court for insulting President Buhari

Ikama Kato, a youth leader, has been remanded by Justice Dimas Gwama of the Magistrates’ Court IV in Yola for disrespecting President Muhammadu Buhari and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, on social media.

Kato, a Hong-based youth leader for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), allegedly used his Facebook page to denounce the insecurity in the area following recent attacks by armed men suspected of being Boko Haram members.

The young leader, who is from the same local council as the SGF, called out the latter and Buhari in a viral video for failing to protect residents’ lives.

He referred to the SGF as a “disappointment and a failure,” as well as the two leaders in charge as “useless men.”

Following this, Kato was suspended by the Hong chapter of the PDP for using vulgar language, as well as his vituperations towards the SGF, a well-known figure in the council.

A repentant Kato produced another video and apologized shortly after his suspension by the PDP.

However, Kato was brought before the magistrates’ court by a group called Adamawa Concerned Citizens, which was chaired by Hussain Gambo, a supporter of the SGF.

The decision was made, according to the group’s leadership, to serve as a deterrence to individuals who use social media to insult responsible Nigerians.
