Ghana’s sitting president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has proposed to the management of University Of Development Studies to name their noble institution after the first president of the Fourth Republic, Jerry John Rawlings who passed on last Thursday.
History has it that, late Rawlings played a remarkable role in the establishment of the university by using the prize money he won from the World Food Prize as seed money for its foundation in the late 80’s.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony at UDS over the weekends, Akufo-Addo petitioned the stakeholders to remember Rawlings for his role in establishment of the university.
He respectfully declined the honour and offer because of his principle not to have national monuments and facilities named after him.”
Notwithstanding these sentiments and with all due respect to him, it is my strong belief that such an honour should be accorded him…
In October 2013 UDS conferred a doctorate degree on Chairman Rawlings citing his contribution to the development of the institution.
