Trotro driver runs over Policeman to avoid arrest

A bus driver reportedly run over a policeman in an attempt to escape arrest over an alleged traffic offense.

The event is reported to have occurred during the late hours of the morning on Friday, February 28, 2020, at the Trinity Avenue near Mempesasem at East Legon in Accra.

An eyewitness who was at the scene recounted that the driver and the conductor (mate) abandoned the minibus and fled after the incident and there were no passengers in the minibus.

Two policemen said to be from the Madina Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) in their attempt to arrest the driver chased him with a police vehicle and stopped him on the Trinity Avenue near the entrance of the Trinity Theological Seminary.

According to the eyewitness, the policemen got out of their vehicle and one policeman went in front of the vehicle whilst the other went behind it.

In their attempt to open the door of the minibus, the trotro driver reportedly reversed the vehicle and run over the policeman who was behind and dragged him on the road for some metres.

Some car salespersons around the area who witnessed the incident chased the trotro driver until he parked the vehicle near a bush and took to his heels together with his conductor (mate).

The injured policeman has since been taken to the hospital for medical care, according to the eyewitness.
