Schools in Ethiopia are re-opening from Monday in the wake of shutting for over seven months due to the Covid pandemic.

The schools will resume in stages with students in the rural areas getting back to classes first.

Schools were closed down after the country reported its first case of coronavirus in March.

The country is aiming to reopen all primary and secondary schools by mid-November.

Despite the government’s call to have school activities resumed, some parents feel sceptical about sending their children to school.

The Ministry of Education has said it was taking necessary measures to curb the dangers of the virus spreading in schools.

Highlighting the several measures the government is putting in place, the Ministry of Education said one of the measures is to distribute 50 million face masks for pupils and teachers.

However, Senior High School finalists are expected to take their final exams online next year.

Following this announcement, it’s worthy of note that in the phase of the pandemic, Ethiopia never introduced full lockdown procedures.

A five-month state of emergency ended in early September, and the country has returned to relative normalcy.
