Charter House, the organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards have announced the nominees for the 2019 VGMA Artiste Of The Decade.
The Artiste Of The Decade Award is aimed at honouring and recognizing hardworking musicians who have contributed to the growth of the Ghanaian music industry over the past decade.
This category was part of the 2009 Ghana Music Awards and Kojo Antwi was awarded with the prestigious award (Artiste Of The Decade).
These are the ten nominees for the Artiste Of the Decade Award and their profiles.
1. Becca
Rebecca Akosua Acheampomaa Acheampong, known in the music industry as Becca. She’s a singer and a songwriter and has been in the music scene since 2007.
Becca released her first album ‘Sugar’ in 2007 and earned 5 nominations at the 2008 Ghana Music Awards.
2. Efya
Ghanaian songstress Efya born
Jane Awindor is also a singer and a songwriter and has been doing music since 2013 and has contributed so much to the Music Industry. Efya has won several awards since she started doing music.
3. Joe Mettle
Gospel musician and songwriter Joseph Mettle popular known as Joe Mettle is also one of the many battling for the Artiste of the decade award. He is also in the nominations for the gospel song of the year and gospel musician of the year.
Joe Mettle made history during the 2017 VGMA for being the first Gospel musician to win the VGMA Artiste of the year.
4. No Tribe and Nacee
Another contender for the Artise of the decade award is No Tribe and Nacee:
No tribe is a Ghanaian Gospel group headed by Nacee. The Music group has been in existence for the past decade and are known for songs like Bohye, Mesi me Dan, Adom, Aseda and many more.
5. Okyeame Kwame
The Rap Doctor Okyeame Kwame is also a nominee for the prestigious award.
Kwame Nsiah-Apau, known by his stage name Okyeame Kwame and nicknamed Rap Doctor, is a Ghanaian musician, songwriter.
Okyeame Kwame started music with way back with Okyeame Quophi and they were called Akyeame. The two released several hit songs and won many awards. Okyeame Kwame was also part of the Bradez group. He has played an outstanding role in the Ghana Music Industry.
6. R2BEES
Hip-hop duo R2BEES who recently released their third studio album SITE 15 has also been nominated for the Artise of decade award.
The duo has been vibrant and active in the music scene for the past years and has duly paid their ‘dues’ to the industry. R2BEES were nominated at the 2013 BET Awards.
7. Samini
The legendary Samini Dagaati is also on the list!
Emmanuel Andrews Samini, known by his stage name Samini, is a Ghanaian Reggae and Dancehall artiste.
Sammi started music in 1999 and released his debut studio album, Dankwasere in 2004. He has been in the music industry since infancy and he’s considered a legend, so it’s not surprising he’s on the list.
8. Sarkodie
Michael Owusu Addo popularly called Sarkodie is also battling for the Artiste of the Decade Award.
Sarkodie is one of the few artistes in Ghana who’s pushing the Ghana Music forward. He has been relevant in the Ghanaian music fraternity and has contributed greatly to the growth of the industry.
He won the Best International Act: Africa category at the 2012 BET Awards.
9. Shatta Wale
The Self acclaimed Dancehall king Charles Nii Armah Mensah Aka Shatta Wale is number nine on the list of nominees. Shatta has gotten a number of nominations in the VGMA 2019. He is a strong contender in the artiste of the year category and his song My level has been tipped to win the highlife song of the year.
Wale started music over a decade ago and was then called Bandana. He has contributed to the success story of the industry so it’s not surprising he’s on the list. He has been nominated for several categories in this year’s VGMA.
10. Stonebwoy
Last on the list is Stonebwoy, born Livingstone Etse Satekla. Stonebwoy is a Ghanaian afropop, dancehall and reggae artiste.
He started music when he was in class four and has since contributed to the growth of the music industry in and outside Ghana.
In 2015, he won Best International Act: Africa at the 2015 BET Awards. Stonebwoy was nominated in about nine categories for the 2019 VGMAs and it is expected that the Dancehall artiste of the year will not miss him no matter how hard the competition is going to be. He has been winning the dancehall artiste of the year category for the past 4 years.
The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards has been tagged as the biggest musical event night in Ghana and this years’ edition marks two decades of honoring great talents in the music industry in Ghana and Africa at large.
