Lawyer for the bus driver and his conductor (mate) who openly fought with a policeman has alleged that his clients are being subjected to serious beating in police custody.

The two are been represented in court by renowned human rights lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu. According to the lawyer, the physical appearance and demeanour of the accused clearly confirm they have suffered abuse.

“You can see the fear,” he told Accra-based Joy FM, adding that the driver and his mate have been psychologically affected by the treatment meted out to them. The lawyer made the claims following a meeting with the accused persons before they were transferred to Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) custody. He, however, revealed that the two are currently receiving better treatment in the BNI custody than they did at the Odorkor District Police Station.

“From our conversation, the BNI has provided them with a safe haven,” Francis Xavier Sosu stated. He added that, after hearing from the accused, he can conclude that the driver and his mate are rather the victims and not the abusers.

The driver, Francis Buabeng, and his mate, Albert Ansah, are set to appear before court on April 1 after being remanded.

They have since been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and causing unlawful damage, although they reportedly pleaded not guilty.
