Nigeria’s security officers visit Ghana Police for education on security issues

Course 42 Officers of Nigeria’s National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies have paid a study tour to the Police Headquarters, as part of their research on security in Ghana.

On Tuesday 20th October 2020 they sat in a meeting where Director-General COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare led the Police Management Board to answer questions of the visiting team from Nigeria.

They were also taken round some offices of the Ghana Police Service, to familiarize with operations.

The fifteen member team headed by Gp. Capt. MG Gumi (Rtd), a Directing Staff was led by Mr. Michael Kwabla Dzamesi, a Foreign Service Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

Their visit comes in the wake of bloody protest currently in Lekki in Nigeria

The protests started after officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigeria Police Force were accused of extortion, harassment, abuse and murder of citizens.

The protests forced the Nigerian government to dissolve SARS across the country. However, a few days after dissolving SARS, the government announced that a new unit named Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) will replace SARS.

The setting up of a new unit to replace SARS did not stop Nigerians from protesting, as they believe that the creation of SWAT will not end police brutality in the country, hence their demand for a reformation of the Nigeria Police Force.
