A planned demonstration by some traditional leaders and residents of Danfa, Amrahia, and Kweiman in the Ga East District of the Greater Accra Region has been temporarily suspended. This is due to the intervention of Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, who has set up a 5-member committee to investigate allegations against government officials and other individuals for retaining a significant portion of lands returned to these communities by the state in 2020.
*Background*
The government acquired over 300 acres of Diary Farmlands from Danfa to Amrahia and Kweiman for farming purposes in 1968-1970. In 2020, 245 acres were released to the three communities under the 1962 State Land Act after the government failed to utilize the land for its intended purpose.
However, the released lands have been reportedly encroached upon by government officials and individuals such as Clement Gyato. This led to a planned demonstration by chiefs and residents of the three communities, who intended to picket at the Jubilee House to express their displeasure at the alleged encroachment.
However, Chief of Danfa, Nii Dzane Tsuru Afutu Brempong IV, stated in an interview with Gossips24 that they have decided to suspend their intended actions temporarily until the minister’s committee report, expected in a month. He expressed discontent at the disrespect shown to Traditional Authorities by accused government officials and Clement Gyato, warning that trespassers on their lands without permission from traditional leaders will face consequences.
