Ghana’s total public debt stock went by ¢3.5 billion in two months to hit ¢335.9 billion ($57.9 billion) at the end of July 2021, the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data by the Bank of Ghana revealed last week
Ghana statistical service has also revealed that the current population of the country now is 30.8 million. The agency also disclosed that the female population is now 50.7 percent of the total population with 49.3 percent being males.
So with simple mathematics, if the ¢335 billion debt is to be footed by Ghanaians, each one of us will pay 10,877 cedis.
Social media users who have come across this information have blasted the current sitting president, H.E Nana Addo for borrowing excessively.
Meanwhile, the World Bank has cautioned Ghana against excessive borrowing amidst concerns that the country risks being classified as high debt distress country if the situation persists.
