Attorney General’s office threatens to revoke GHAMRO’s license

The office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice has asked the  Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) to respond in writing its willingness to organize its annual General Meeting in the second week of October or risk its license being revoked.

This comes shortly after GHAMRO failed to adhere to earlier directions by the office to hold the AGM in September 2020.

Parts of the letter read;

“The letter dated 23rd September 2020 purports to confirm that GHAMRO will be holding its AGM on Friday, 25th October 2020 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST, School of Business, Kumasi, contrary to the advice of the Attorney-General that… GHAMRO and UNICOM agree on and hold the AGM in the week of September 2020 and not later than Friday 25th September 2020 contained in our letter of 6th August 2020.

“This Office, as the Regulator of Collective Management Societies, rejects the confirmed or set date for the AGM. The proposal for funds from this Office is also unreasonable and unacceptable.”

“We request that you respond to this letter within 7 days of receipt of the letter. Failure  to indicate your willingness  to comply with the directives hereof will cause the  office to suspend  GHAMRO’s license and take other steps as necessary.”

The organization is reported to have requested for a loan of Gch200,000 from the Government stimulus package.
