Following the boxing champion’s petition to the Presidency in September 2019 asking for the 45,000 USD he loaned to the Republic over four decades ago.

Nana Akufo Addo has approved an amount of 45,000 USD to be paid to Ghana’s first-ever world boxing champion, David Kotei, popularly known as D.K Poison.

I write to convey the approval of the President of the Republic for an amount of forty-five Thousand United States Dollars (US$ 45,000) to be paid to Mr David Kotei (a.k.a DK Poison) on compassionate grounds.

A paragraph of the letter from the presidency instructed.

DK Poison who won his second title defence in Shigefumi Fukuyama [Japan] in 1976, was asked by the then Military government led by General Kutu Acheampong.

To loan a part of his prize money to the country to purchase mackerel in the wake to fight the food and economic crisis which had deteriorated the county’s economy during that period.

The boxing icon was given only 34,000 USD out of his total fight prize of 75,000 USD.

After years of trying to get his money back, D.K Poison is finally been able to retrieve his money from the state as a letter signed by Nana Asante Bediatuo, the president’s secretary to the Finance Ministry.

Clearly states that the above mentioned sum of money should be paid to the 69 year old retired professional boxer.
