Zamfara Deputy governor courageously tells the senate that he won’t appear before them for interrogations

Mahdi Aliyu, the Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, who was given a 48-hour deadline to appear before members of the state house of assembly, has indicated that he will not appear since he has taken the lawmakers to court.

The lawmakers had summoned Aliyu to come before them and defend himself against allegations of misbehaviour coming from a political rally he held on July 10 in response to bandit killings in the state’s Maradun LGA.

Aliyu said the parliamentarians’ actions amounted to a gross violation of the law, and that the present court case involves, among other things, any process, in any shape or manner, connected to the instant invitation made to him.

The letter addressed to members of the house of assembly and dated July 29, read;

The pending court action touches among others on any process, in any form or manner relating to instant invitation extended to me.

In this pending case, the office of the Speaker of this honourable house is a party. Further there is an order for maintenance of status quo made by the court on 19th July.

While I am willing to and ready to honour the invitation, sadly, I am constrained by pending suit, and it’s attendant order.

The House asked its legal staff to examine the letter and the court filings after admitting receipt of the letter on Thursday.

While the House was debating the letter, Yusuf Kanoma, the representative for Maru North, criticized the letter and the court order, claiming that the House never discussed impeaching the deputy governor.
