WILL HISTORY BE REPEATED? NPP Lost When They Picked Number 1 While In Power In 2008

When I heard that the NPP picked number 1 during the official balloting at the EC’s head office today, the only thing that occurred to me was HISTORY!

Talking about history, in 2008 when NPP was in power and had all the resources after parking the NDC in opposition for eight good years, many thought the much-yearned for Nana Addo, then flagbearer would take over from H.E John Agyekum Kuffuor, the incumbent.

Just like today, on the day of balloting under the watch of the then EC boss Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, the NPP picked Number 1 – the spot sent a message of victory across the country among all party folks and sympathizers. Quickly the song below was composed.

Shockingly, the verdict for the 2008 election did not go in the favour of the NPP as expected by the majority of Ghanaians in the first round.

This was due to the fact that no candidate received more than 50% of the votes, hence, a run-off election was held on 28 December 2008 between the two candidates who received the most votes, NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo and NDC’s, John Atta Mills.

After the run-off, Mills was certified as the victor on January 3, 2009, by a margin of less than one percent. It is to date the closest election in Ghanaian history.

Since we are all reflecting on history, what does the NPP being in position with Nana Addo as flagbearer and picking number 1 on the ballot mean?
