Ursula Owusu speaks on closure of some radio stations

Minister of communication-designate and digitization Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has opened up on the closure of some radio stations.

The controversial lawmaker said she never authorized the closure of any radio stations.

According to her, over 50 radio stations had to be closed down for failure to have renewed their licenses after their expiration thereof.

Out of that number, 452 were in operation while 173 were not yet in operation.

She said in 2017 when she took over as Minister of Communications, it was noted that 144 stations which have fallen foul of the law were only fined by the NCA to still be in business.

She, therefore, had to charge the NCA to mete out the sanctions according to law.

“Montie FM and Radio Gold were not targeted. If they had not acted in contravention of the law, nobody would have touched them no matter how much you disliked or hated them because they’d have been in compliance with the law,” the Ablekuma West Member of Parliament told the Appointments Committee during her vetting Monday.
