The Government of the United States of America has condemned the reported shootings of protesters in Lekki that took place two days ago.
“The United States strongly condemns the use of excessive force by military forces who fired on unarmed demonstrators in Lagos, causing death and injury”.
Speaking on the issue, Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State condemned the act and called for an investigation to begin immediately into the excessive use of force by the security services.
“We welcome an immediate investigation into any use of excessive force by members of the security forces.Those involved should be held to account in accordance with Nigerian law.”
Essential human rights and core democratic principles, according to him, must be respected by authorities.
He expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims affected by the shootings saying; “We extend our condolences to the victims of the violence and their families.”
