Tema-Akosombo rail line workers threaten strike

Ghanaian workers, contracted by an Indian company Afcons Infrastructure Limited to work on the ongoing construction of a Single Standard Gauge Railway line from Tema to Akosombo, are threatening to embark on a sit-down strike for better wages.

The workers, numbering about 100, wore red in protest of what they said are poor conditions of service.

An aggrieved worker, who spoke to Adom FM’scorrespondent, Isabella Gidiglo, expressed disgust about the accumulation of salaries and warned that the situation will force them to lay down their tools.

He said it is heart-breaking to see some of their colleagues, who got sick at work, either being dumped on their families or sent to hospital without the company funding the medical bills.

“We have decided to go on strike because government is insensitive to the plight of railway workers whose salaries are nothing to write home about. Our employers are not heeding to our plea,” another worker bemoaned.

They have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government to address their concerns or face their wrath.
