People arrested for defying lockdown rules will spend 4 to 10 years in prison – ACP Lydia Donkor

 Director for Legal and Prosecution of the Ghana Police Service in Greater Accra, ACP Lydia Donkor has warned Ghanaians against defying of lockdown rules as she hints persons arrested and tried are likely to spend time in prison.

We are currently in week three of the imposition of restrictions in Greater Accra, and Kumasi. The security services have been operating to enforce the restrictions.

Some recalcitrant persons have been arrested for defying the lockdown rules for several reasons. Some organised parties, other loitered around without tangible reasons, whiles others held gatherings which saw more than 20 people in attendance.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s press briefing today, April 14, 2020, in Accra, ACP Lydia Donkor revealed some people are still having parties, going to the beaches, and other acts which are in violation of the imposition of restriction act.

She revealed 406 persons have been arrested around the country. out of this number, 103 are in custody, 248 have been granted bail and 41 are in court.

Giving a breakdown of the number of arrest, Greater Accra region had 161 cases, Ashanti region 70 cases, Volta region 67 cases, Western Region 8 cases, Eastern Cases 6 cases.

She emphasized that anyone who is arrested will be investigated, prosecuted and fined between 12,000ghc to 50,000ghc or made to serve a term of 4 to 10 years in jail.

She advised Ghanaians to adhere to the lockdown rules and stay at home to avoid spreading the virus.
