NPP and NDC officials unite to feed 10,000 ‘kayayei’

To NPP and NDC officials put aside their differences on Sunday afternoon, to support the trustees of the Ghana Covid-19 Private Sector Fund as they distributed hot meals to head porters, popularly known as ‘kayayei’ in Accra.

The Ghana Covid-19 Private Sector Fund was established to raise money to complement the government’s efforts at confronting and defeating the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Fund’s ‘Feed a kayayo’ project aims to provide one meal a day to at least 10,000 ‘kayayei’ in Accra and Kumasi, the areas which have been placed on lockdown as part of measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

On Sunday, April 5, the trustees of the Covid-19 Private Sector Fund were joined by politicians to distribute meals to ‘kayayei’ in Osu, Accra Central and Darkuman, all suburbs of Accra.

The NDC’s Elvis Afriyie Ankrah (former Deputy Local Government Minister) and Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong (former Attorney General) worked together with the NPP’s Sammi Awuku (National Youth Organiser) and Gifty Oware-Aboagye (deputy Executive Director of the National Service Secretariat), to distribute the food packs to the head porters.

A commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Julie Essiam, who mooted the idea to feed the ‘kayayei’ was impressed with the turnout and what the project is achieving after just five days in operation.

“This pandemic is not just a government issue,” she says. “I believe it’s an issue for all Ghanaians to mobilise ourselves behind the government and to support each other to go through this unprecedented challenging time.”

She expressed gratitude to everyone who has made a pledge to the Covid-19 Private Sector Fund and urged the public to contribute to help save the underprivileged from starvation during the lockdown.

“I’ve been so emotional and amazed at the number of people who have come together to mobilise ourselves and get some donations. I believe that as leadership of the country, we can mobilise each other to make sure that all our families have a meal every single day because we are one family.”
