On Sunday, the 31st of August, 2022, which was supposed to be the deadline for re-registration, the minister of communications, Ursula Owusu, had a press conference and extended the deadline to the 30th of September, 2022.
The main reason why a lot of Ghanaians have not registered their sims is because of their not having their Ghana card. Some are yet to register for the Ghana card, while others are waiting for their card to be issued to them since they have gone through the procedure to have their cards.
On Monday, August 1, on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, Executive Secretary of the Authority, Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, said that his organization was not formed to work by deadlines but rather in perpetuity.
in his own words he said:
“NIA was not set up with a specific deadline,”
“NIA is an organization set up in perpetuity. What that means is that we are to deliver our mandate pretty much the same as the hospital or maternity ward where people go there as and when they need to. “
“That is the scheme prescribed by law and that is the scheme we are implementing and we are doing so in perpetuity.” There is no timeline and the intention of the law is that people will go to the NIA at their leisure and pleasure to go and get registered, and those people will be those who were not captured during registration. “
