National Chief Imam calls off Friday prayers among Muslims

National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu has asked leaders of various Muslim communities in the country to call off Friday prayers until further notice.

On Sunday, May 31, 2020, the President of the Republic Nana Akuffo Addo, in his tenth address to the nation eased the initial restrictions on religious activities to allow 100 people in mosques and churches.

The president’s directive will be effective from Friday, June 7, 2020, as he urged on these religions to use the opportunity to intercede on behalf of the nation.

However, the National Chief Imam in a press statement, after consulting the leadership of the various Muslim communities, asked that all Friday Jumu’a Salat be suspended.

According to the statement signed by the Chairman of the National Chief Imam Advisory Board, Alhaji Mammmah Gado Mohammed, this is to prevent overcrowding in mosques which wouldn’t be good in the nation’s fight against the spread of coronavirus.

Part of the notice released by the office of the Chief Imam reads;

(a) In view of the high risk of losing control of huge congregational sizes, pursuant to the directive of the president limiting the number of worshipers to hundred (100) Jumu’a Salat in major Masjid (Mosques) Particularly in urban areas, should be discouraged until further.
