Mali Ex-President Amadou Toumani Touré Deceased

Sad news circulating online has it that Former Malian President Amadou Toumani Touré has kicked the bucket at the age of 72.

The former Head of State died early this morning in Turkey where he was undergoing treatment.

Local news outlets report that, before his departure from Mali, he had undergone an emergency heart surgery in the capital, Bamako.

His Excellency Amadou Toumani Touré was a Malian politician who was President of Mali from 2002 to 2012. Touré was head of President Moussa Traoré’s personal guard when a popular revolution overthrew the regime in March 1991 and Colonel Touré arrested the President and led the revolution.

Mr. Touré, an army general, was hailed for ending years of military rule and handing power to civilians after organizing elections in 1992.

He was nicknamed the “soldier of democracy”.
