Just In: Mali’s coup Free overthrown President

Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, Mali’s overthrown president, has been released from detention and driven to his home early Thursday, nine days after a military coup brought an end to his seven years in power.

According to reports, a heavy security escort took Mr. Keïta to his house in Sebeninkoro, a residential neighborhood of Bamako, capping his abrupt fall after military officers with guns arrested him, took him to their base and forced him to resign on television.

His release had been a key demand of Mali’s neighbours and international organisations, including the African Union and European Union.

Keita’s relative confirming his release said the 75-year-old former leader had returned overnight to his house in the Sebenikoro district of the capital Bamako.
