John Gilbert Getty, one of the grandsons of J Paul Getty, has been found dead in a hotel room.
John, who is one of the heirs to the Getty fortune, passed away Friday, Nov 20, in San Antonio, after he was discovered unresponsive in a hotel room.
According to TMZ, no foul play is suspected at this point, and the cause of death is pending and will be known after autopsy.
The family broke the news through a rep, saying: “With a heavy heart, Gordon Getty announces the death of his son, John Gilbert Getty.”
The spokesperson adds, “John was a talented musician who loved rock and roll. He will be deeply missed.”
John’s other brother, Andrew, died in 2015 from meth intoxication and his own, mother, Ann, died from a heart attack just this past September.
John Gilbert was one of several descendants of J. Paul Getty, the oilman whose art collection served as the basis for the Getty Museum in L.A.
The 2017 movie, All the Money in the World, was made about J. Paul Getty, the richest man in the world who refused to pay his grandson’s ransom after his 1973 kidnap.
The movie was “rooted in truth”. In fact, some of the scenes that unfold on-screen are even less dramatic than what happened in real life, according to reports.
J Paul Getty spoke to the press at the time to explain why he would not pay the ransom, saying: “I have 14 grandchildren, and if I pay a penny of ransom, I’ll have 14 kidnapped grandchildren.”
Not too much is known about John Getty who was found dead in a hotel, other than the fact he bounced around in Los Angeles, jumping from one multi-million-dollar home to the next, and that he was apparently pals with Gov. Gavin Newsom.
