On Sunday, August 20, 2023, tragedy struck in Adeiso, a quiet town in the Eastern Region of Ghana, when a horrifying incident unfolded. A mentally challenged man , Paa Kwasi, aged 35, armed with a machete, turned on his own family, leading to a gruesome chain of events.

Eyewitnesses recount that the police were called to the scene when Paa Kwasi, who had previously been restrained at a prayer camp due to his erratic behavior, somehow broke free from his chains.

He proceeded to his own house, where he brutally attacked his grandmother, ultimately taking her life. In a desperate attempt to save the elderly woman, a cousin named Agbesi also fell victim to the frenzied attack.

The motivations behind these horrifying acts remain shrouded in mystery, leaving a shaken community searching for answers. As the police arrived on the scene, they were confronted by Paa Kwasi, who refused to drop his weapon. Tragically, the situation escalated, leading to the police having to use lethal force to protect themselves and those around them.

The aftermath of this devastating incident sees two lives lost, with the bodies of Yaa Ameyawo and Paa Kwasi now resting in the Nsawam Government Hospital mortuary. Agbesi, the courageous cousin who survived the attack, is currently receiving medical treatment.

This horrifying incident is not an isolated case. Just a week earlier, on August 13, 2023, Eric Narh, a 28-year-old mentally challenged man, brutally murdered his 78-year-old blind uncle using a machete.

These heart-wrenching events bring to light a broader issue – the increasing presence of mentally unstable individuals on the streets of Ghana. As previously highlighted in a July 18, 2023, GhanaWeb article, there is growing concern among the public regarding the rising number of mentally deranged individuals who roam our communities.

Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive approach that includes proper psychiatric care and facilities. Neglecting the mental health needs of our citizens not only endangers the affected individuals but also poses a significant risk to society as a whole.

It’s high time we prioritize mental health services and work towards creating a society where those in need receive the care and support they require, preventing further tragic incidents like those witnessed in Adeiso and beyond.
