A law company representing Barcelona partners has launched a formal complaint with the European Commission to prevent Lionel Messi from joining the French football giant – PSG
The lawyers feel they have sufficient legal grounds to pursue the matter because PSG’s Financial Fair Play condition is worse than FC Barcelona’s.
Recall that yesterday, Lionel Messi gave an emotional farewell inside the Camp Nou stadium and formally confirmed his exit from Barcelona after 21 years and 17 seasons in the top division.
As a result of La Liga’s Financial Fair Play laws, the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner claimed he was not looking forward to leaving the club and was even willing to give up half of his salary to stay — but he was told an agreement to extend his contract was not possible.
PSG came knocking with a new mega-contract hours after his live goodbye speech, and news arose that Leo Messi and his father Jorge had received the Ligue 1 club’s formal offer and were considering it.
Part of the lawsuit reads;
On behalf of FC Barcelona partners, my firm has prepared a complaint with the European Commission and demands for provisional suspension before civil and administrative courts in France to prevent Paris-Saint Germain from signing Lionel Messi.
PSG’s ratios in terms of ‘Financial Fair Play’ are worse than those of FC Barcelona.
In 2019-2020, PSG’s salary-to-income ratio was 99%, while Barcelona’s was 54%. Meanwhile, the difference has increased.
It is inconceivable that the ‘Financial Fair Play’ serves to aggravate the drifts of football-business, the instrumentalization of football by sovereign powers, and the distortion of competitions.
