Nigeria Lawmakers Rejects Motion To Lift Ban On Twitter

The Legislators in Nigeria’s House of Representatives have rejected the motion to lift the ban on Twitter following a majority vote.

Telecommunication companies in Nigeria were directed by the Federal Government to turn off the microblogging site, Twitter on June 4, 2021, after they deleted a tweet of President Buhari which went against their community guidelines.

The Federal Government suspended Twitter because the social media platform undermines Nigeria’s corporate existence.

The House of Representatives deliberated on the reports of the committee assign to look into the suspension on Thursday, July 1, 2021, and the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Toby Okechukwu called for an amendment to one of the committee recommendations.

The recommendation was that the FG should take a look at the negative effect the ban will have on Nigerians who depend on the platform for livelihood as they’ve suspended the social media site.

Well, as the recommendation was placed for a voice vote, the majority of the representative said the motion should be laid to rest.

A committee was mandated on June 8, 2021, by House Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila to commence an investigation into the band on Twitter in the country.

However, the FG had insisted that Twitter must pay taxes to Nigeria and register as a company before it would be allowed to operate.
