Former President John Dramani Mahama has received a delegation of European Union (EU) Ambassadors ahead of the December 7 elections that is only about a month away.
The delegation was on a pre-election monitoring and decided to visit Mahama to encourage him and his party to ensure a peaceful poll.
The delegation was made up of Madam Daniela d’Orlandi, Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Madam Anne Sophie Avé, French Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Christoph Retzlaff, German Ambassador to Ghana; and led by Mrs Diana Acconcia, Head of the EU delegation to Ghana.
John Mahama’s receiving team was also made up of Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, National Chairman of the NDC; Mr Prosper Douglas Bani, a former Minister for the Interior; Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the NDC Director of Elections, Lieutenant Colonel Gbevlo Lartey (rtd), a former National Security Coordinator and Mr Emmanuel Bombande, a former Deputy Foreign Minister.
The former President expressed gratitude to the EU delagation for having interest in Ghana.
“This year is a special year in Ghana, because we are having Presidential and Parliamentary elections. And we think that these elections are critical for consolidating Ghana’s democracy and also moving Ghana to the next level, especially after a year, where we have this COVID-19 pandemic that has affected the whole world,” Mr. Mahama said.
He also mentioned some shortfalls of the Electoral Commission in the build up towards the elections including having to file nominations with a provisional register.
The leader of the delegation, Mrs. Acconcia urged all parties to maintain peace before, during and after the polls.
