Sarkodie Real Name

Known popularly by his stage name Sarkodie aka Obidibiponbidi, the rapper is known in real life as Michael Owusu Addo. He chose the name Sarkodie because of his notion that people who bear the name Sarkodie often turn out to be rich.

According to the rapper, his father had two friends who were both called Sarkodie and they were all rich men. He decided to call himself by the alias because he also wanted to be rich like his dad’s friends.

Sarkodie started rap at the age of four and throughout his education right from when he was in preparatory school till when he gained his degree in Graphic Designing from IPMC, he had intense ambitions of changing the music game and making his presence felt worldwide in the coming years.

As a creative and innovative rapper, Sarkodie began his instrumental career as an underground rapper, where his appearances on various rap competitions among which the most popular at the time, “Kasahare Level” on Adom FM saw him knocking out several other rappers and becoming a rap champion in Tema.

It was through these rap battles that he met his manager Duncan Williams of Duncwills Entertainment. He also met Edem, Castro, Kwaw Kese, and other artistes who introduced him to Hammer of the Last Two, a well-known producer. Hammer who was impressed with Sarkodie’s unique ability to freestyle with clever rhymes mixed with logic featured Sarkodie on two songs off Ewe rapper Edem’s 2008 album, Volta Regime, to introduce him before the recording of his debut album.

After this exposure, Sarkodie then went into the studio to work on his debut album “Ma Kye” with producers including JaySo and Kill Beats. The first single “Baby” featuring Mugees of the duo group R2Bees became an instant hit and made Sarkodie a household name in the music industry,

In 2009, Sarkodie recorded his debut album Makye. Its production was primarily handled by Killbeatz and Jayso. The album features guest appearances from Kwaw Kese, J-Town, Sway and Paedae of R2Bees. Makye received positive reviews from critics and fans.

Sarkodie’s second studio album Rapperholic was released in 2012. It features guest appearances from Efya, Chidynma, Mugeez of R2Bees, Obrafour, Jayso, and EL. The album was supported by five singles: “Good Bye”, “One Time For Your Mind”, “You Go Kill Me”, “Living Legend”, and “Onyame Nhyira”.

In January 2014, Sarkodie released his third studio album Sarkology. Primarily recorded in Twi, the album features guest appearances from Fuse ODG, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Banky W., Timaya, 2 Face Idibia, Efya, Mugeez, Obrafour, Burna Boy, Vivian Chidid, Vector, Silvastone, Sk Blinks, Stonebwoy, Joey B, J Town, Lil Shaker, Raquel, Sian, Kofi B and AKA. Its production was handled by Magnom, Hammer, Killbeatz, Masterkraft,  and Silvastone, among others. The album’s launch concert was held at the Accra Sports Stadium in December.

On 12 September 2015, Sarkodie released Mary, a live album named after his grandmother who died in 2012. “Mewu” was released as the lead single from the album two months prior.  An autograph session for the album was held at the West Hills Mall in Accra. Sarkodie sold nearly 4,000 copies of the album on the first day of its release.

Sarkodie released his fifth studio album Highest on 8 September 2017. It comprises 19 songs, including 3 interludes and a bonus track. Released through Sarkcess Music and Dice Recordings, the album features guest appearances from Jesse Jagz, Moelogo, Flavour, Korede Bello, Victoria Kimani and Big Narstie. Highest was primarily produced by Jayso, with additional production from Masterkraft, TSpize, Ced Solo, Nova, and Guilty Beatz.

Sarkodie released his debut extended play Alpha in June 2019. The 6-track EP features guest appearances from Joey B and Ebony Reigns.

He released his sixth studio album Black Love on December 20, 2019. It features guest artist such as Mr Eazi, Efya, Donae’o, Idris Elba, Stonebwoy, Tekno, Maleek Berry, King Promise and Kizz Daniel.
