Custom officers clash with rice smugglers in Katsina, six reported dead

Six persons have been reportedly killed, with more than 20 others injured, after a Nigeria Customs Service Hilux vehicle rammed into a crowd by the roadside in Jibia, Katsina State, early Monday morning.

Jibia is located on the Nigerian-Niger border, and many of its citizens participate in cross-border trading.

According to many individuals in the town who were present when the incident happened, the accident occurred when cops were pursuing a J5 Peugeot bus suspected of being involved in rice smuggling.

Whiles speaking with newsmen Almustapha Danyne said;

The driver lost control of the vehicle and ran into people standing by the roadside” a resident of the town

Six people died immediately while the injured were taken to a hospital in Jibia. I was told that more of them have died but I cannot confirm that because I did not follow them to the hospital.

The owner of the J5 Peugeot is among those buying maize from Dandume town and bringing it here (Jibia) for sale. They normally give money to the Customs officers though what they are doing is not smuggling.

Mr Danye also claimed that as soon as the customs agents exited the vehicle involved in the accident, they took to their heels.
